I am a student of Mike's and I have really enjoyed the past 2 years training and hanging out with the people at THE BLAST. Ultimate Fighter Mixed Martial Arts MMA

Greg Nelson drilling with BLAST owner Mike Vaughn at the 2010 CSW Training Camp

When you turn your televisionGround and pound on and watch Spike TV, what is the most common show playing? It usually is a re-run of an Ultimate Fighting Championship event or related show, such as a replay of an UFC Pay Per View, a rerun of the reality show ‘Ultimate Fighter’ or a LIVE Fight Night event. The prevalence of mixed martial arts (MMA) on various TV stations (i.e. Spike TV, Versus, Showtime) demonstrates its popularity and shows how it is becoming the fastest growing sport in America today.

MMA events held all over the United States as well as other countries in Europe and Asia. The sport is composed of several different martial arts, which include stand up, clinch, and ground techniques. In order to be a complete MMA competitor, you need to be skilled in all areas; superiority in only one art will leave you vulnerable in the cage. The most popular and effective arts in MMA include: Muay Thai Kickboxing (punches, kicks, elbows and knees), Standing Clinch (Greco Roman Wrestling, American Wrestling and Muay Thai Clinch), Takedowns and Takedown Defense (wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) Ground Grappling with Strikes (Brazilian Jitsu/wrestling control positions combined with strikes and submissions on the ground). You will receive training in all of these areas here at The BLAST in our curriculum classes as well as on TEAM BLAST.

An integral part of performing well in MMA is having supreme conditioning; without being in great shape one doesn’t stand a chance in the sport. Because of this, MMA classes at The BLAST not only include training effective techniques, learning cage control, and MMA strategy, but also include intense strength and conditioning workouts to make sure you are ready to compete, if you choose to do so. The BLAST’s MMA program is designed for students who wish to compete as well as those who are just intrigued with the sport and looking for a great way to get in shape. All students, whether recreational martial artists or MMA competitors, enjoy training MMA for the phenomenal cardiovascular and strength training workouts and general understanding of the sport. If the student decides to step into the cage, competition is the ultimate way to test ones technical skills and mental strength.

Our MMA curriculum consists of:

  • Training all areas of MMA
  • Safe MMA sparring
  • What techniques are effective in what areas of MMA
  • Developing your own MMA game
  • Getting into competitive shape
  • Proper use of heavy bags and training dummies
  • Proper use of focus mitts, thai pads and kick shields
  • Cage strategy
  • Mental preparation: controlling emotions in competition
