Mixed Martial Arts or MMA has derived from the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993. At that time they developed a competition that would pit different martial arts styles against each other regardless of age or weight.
In the early Ultimate Fighting Championships Brazilian Jiu Jitsu deriving from a family in Brazil called The Gracies dominated the sport. Their art consisted of getting an attacker down and submitting him in a multitude of ways using armlocks, chokes, sweeps, leg locks and other different types of submissions on the ground.
Today the Ultimate Fight Championship has set a mode for what is called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Events take place in all regions of the United States as well as other countries. The sport of Mixed Martial Arts has evolved in many ways.
Each competitor now fights in their weight class and must be proficient in Muay Thai Kickboxing (Punches, Kicks, Elbows and Knees), Standing Clinch (Greco Roman Wrestling, American Wrestling and Muay Thai Clinch), Takedowns and Takedown Defense (Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) Ground Grappling with Hits ( Brazilian Jitsu/Wrestling holding positions with strikes on the ground).
